WOVEN TOGETHER
Buffalo, New York, 2022
In collaboration with Stitch Buffalo
Commissioned by The Buffalo AKG Art Museum
(formerly The Albright-Knox Art Gallery)
Sited on the central atrium stair of a new community health centre, ‘Woven Together’ comprises of various groups of custom pillows sewn together in sets of 2, 3, 4 and 5 to encourage people to linger in the space in groups. This project is a collaboration with Stitch Buffalo, a local non-profit that works with refugees to promote traditional handicraft techniques from participants’ home countries. We worked with twelve Burmese refugees who hand wove cloth in traditional patterns using back-strap looms and sewed these into unique pillows. The pattern and colour combination of each pillow was determined by the weavers while the vibrant colour pallete itself evolved from a series of workshops held with art students at a neighboring highschool.
