URBAN BALLROOM

First Place Prize

Ideas Competition, John Street, Toronto, Canada, 2011

Through simple interventions that allow different scales of occupation, this project aims to provide an exciting and playful multifunctional outdoor room at the corner of King and John streets in Toronto. The ceiling is formed by a web of individually solar-powered globe lights which illuminate the space and provide spatial definition, compressing the square in the middle through a catenary bulge. The ground is patterned and left primarily open yet is framed at the edges with ball-shaped seating.
